In Which I Play the UkuleleDecember 20, 2009

THANK YOU! Almost all of that yarn sold, most of it within hours of posting that last blog. Know what that meant? It meant that we got in the car, and went to the Fifth String in Berkeley, and I picked out my new ukulele! It's a gorgeous Ohana concert ukulele, and it's everything I wanted, and it sounds SO pretty.

What? You want to know how pretty it sounds? A few of you asked me to put up a video, so here you go. I'm sorry it's so dark, but my office lights are dim, and it's nighttime, but I couldn't wait to show you. And, um, I forgot the name of the song in the heat of the filming. It's "Tonight You Belong To Me," a song from the '20s made famous in The Jerk (oh, I think that's one of the funniest moments in flim, when Bernadette Peters suddenly pulls out her trumpet and Steve Martin just gazes lovingly at her).

Forgive the mistakes. But I LOVE THIS UKULELE! WOOT! I HAVE TO GO PLAY SOME MORE NOW.

"That was the swimming pool at the Marriott." Dude, you're awesome. I busted up. Scared Boonie.

I so love this...you rock the uke.

Beautiful!

Always knew you could do anything, but that was a lovely finesse! Great playing and singing!

yer Dad

My 11 y.o. dau. (cottonhollow on Rav) is a knitting uker too.

She's also getting a new uke for xmas...shhhh!

Such fun!

Fabulous!

wow! very Hawiian. You deserve it kiddo.

Wow, Rachael, you sing so well, wonderful! And what a beautiful ukulele, hope it will serve you well for years to come.

You are adorable AND a good singer!

You never cease to amaze me Rachael. You can write and knit and sing and play the ukelele and you're even cuter on video than you are in pictures!

Could you be any cuter? I don't think so.

You are the most adorable thing of my morning. <3 Way to make a cold grey Monday morning full of win.

You are so cute with your ukelele. Great song :)

Sounds great!

p.s. Dau. is in a uke band in our town, the leader of which is a local dermatologist. His website is www.doctoruke.com and he has lots of uke songs listed. Enjoy!

aw it's been way too long since i'd heard your voice, girlie. and MAN WITHOUT LIPSTICK AND EVERYTHING? YOU"RE SUCH A RISK TAKER!?!?! :) hahahahaha just teasing you!! this made me super big smile. ;) miss you!

p.s. "MY honey, I know..." pretty awesome, duder. ;)

Love that scene from The Jerk. That was my family movie-- watched it every time we all ended up home on a Friday night with nothing to do. And your rendition? Adorable.

I have a crush on you now.

oh my gosh, you're adorable and wonderful! i've always wanted to play the ukulele, and you've totally inspired me to do it.

I totally love this post. It makes me so so happy.

You have a great voice! (I'm a voice teacher - I know these things! :D So glad you got a good uke.

That was awesome.. thanks for the morning sing-song :) My b/f says you've got a really good mischevious smile, and *I* say you've got a really good voice!

Hooray! You're right, the new one sounds a lot better - which means a lot coming from me, because I have NO ear for that kind of thing WHATSOEVER.

If I can tell the difference? It's a big difference.

OK...you are WAY too cute! What a multi, multi, multi talent you are. Thanks for the song it was wonderful...you made my day!

*applause*

Awesome! I had no idea you could sing! Well done.

You're right about the sounds of the ukes. I had the same epiphany the day I tried a Taylor Guitar after years of struggling on an old Yamaha Classical. "Oh--THIS is what an acoustic guitar is SUPPOSED to sound like!"

PS: I think my uke is a baritone uke. It has four strings. It's an Artist Ltd. Tell Lala the lap steel is a "basic C6 non-pedal" variety (six strings).

You are the cutest schmoo EVAR. Pls move to Athens so we can start a ukelele-keyboard band where we sing lots of harmony.

Yay I love that song! I enjoyed your rendition!

Thanks for sharing :)

woooohooooo! that was fabulous!

Rachael:

You look inspired playing so simply on your new ukulele! Iw ish you and Lala and wonderful Christmas and lots of love and true happiness! xx

Wonderful!! As many have already commented: Super cute. It was also great fun to hear the voice that writes the blog. Adds a new element. Thank you for sharing. :D --christen

That ranks as one of the coolest things I've seen on the eentsy screen yet. Congrats on the new instrument!

It's a bountiful universe and you have your uke and peoples have their yarns. Your voice always (twice!) surprises me, I still expect a breathless, gaspy, femme-y voice. Obviously, I am quite WRONG. First time I've been wrong all day. Now I'm babbling . . .

Loved that! Thanks!

You are so amazing! I hope you and Lala have a great Christmas!

So fun to watch-thanks:)

So Very Pretty! What a nice voice you have.

Isn't it great when wonderful things happen? ("a-wunnerful, wunnerful" if you grew up with Lawrence Welk like I did). So happy to hear you sing - you were great!

This just made me smile all over! Fabulous!!

Thanks for posting that. I just finished listening to it for the second time; it makes me smile and I needed a pick-me-up. A sweet song sweetly conveyed. Congratulations on your new ukulele!

You are the cutest thing in the entire world (well, next to my 2yo son, who thoroughly enjoyed watching this video with me).

Gorgeous beautiful AND you can sing!?!?

Just got my daughter a case for her uke. Also do you know the web site Beatles Complete on Ukulele?

Dudette, you just made my day. Really. If that writer gig doesn't work out for you, you can always get a job singing on the beach in Hawaii.

Fantastic! Your joy at playing really comes across.

A friend of mine posted this hilarious uke group video, and I thought you'd enjoy it too!
